Howard Update 12/27

Merry Christmas to all!

Reading the paper on
Thursday morning.
Howard has been down with us since Friday 12/21.   We have just been relaxing and staying around the house for the most part.

He is still getting around okay, and we got him a new fancy-schmancy walker that he will be able to use and take breaks and sit down.   We also got him a light / magnifier (next to him in the picture), so he can read and do puzzles, etc.   We know he misses reading the newspaper, so hopefully this will help.

His hearing has worsened and sometimes the hearing aids do not help.   His fingers do not have the dexterity to change the batteries easily or to put them in correctly.   We got him a machine that helps clean them overnight, which does okay (when it is used).   Kevin and I both use apps on our phones that writes in big text so we can make sure he understands us.

He does not converse much.   This is probably because of the hearing, but also because his memory is not sharp.  He has asked us several times what day it is, and when Kevin picked him up on the 21st, he asked Kevin if it was Christmas Day.

I had to laugh as we were having Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve.  I cooked a spiral ham, roasted potatoes, green beans and rolls.   He had plenty of all except the green beans, which he pointedly declined.

We plan to have him here through New Years, and will take him again to Dave and Busters for their family NYE party (4-7pm).

We are also hoping to get a chance to talk with him about assisted living, which is something we all feel is now necessary.

Howard Update 10/29

By Kevin

I called Dad on Thursday to see if he was keen on coming down to Milpitas Friday night to spend the weekend. He said he thought he would, so I drove to work at Alameda on Friday, then drove to El Cerrito after work.

Sometimes Dad wants to go out to dinner, but he said he wasn't hungry, so we headed to Milpitas. But as we were leaving, I didn't see his pill box in his case with his toothbrush and shaver. He said he had his pills, but I went to the dining room table and picked up the weekly pill box and put them in his case.

On the way, I asked him if he would like to stop for dinner, but he said whatever I wanted to do. I wasn't feeling hungry, and thought I could make him something at home. At home, I showed him a pizza and Lean Cuisine and he chose the pizza, which he ate most of while we watched the World Series. It was getting late at the 12th inning, so we decided to go to sleep, later finding out that it turned out to be the longest World Series game.

Late Saturday morning I went to a county-wide training for CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). I've been a member of the Milpitas CERT for about a year. It was a 3 hour training that covered search and rescue, medical treatment, and command post management. It was very good training with many dedicated CERT members and experienced mentors.

Margaret took Katie and Dad to Costco to have them work on one of Dad's hearing aids (we had tried replacing the batteries). They were able to repair it (clean the wax out) and since we had gone to Costco several times to repair it, I thought it would be better to have the device they used, if it was inexpensive. It's a dehumidifier that turns the wax into a powder that's easy to remove, and I found one on Amazon for us to get. We'll either have it at Dad's if he would prefer, or have it at our house and use it when he visits.

When I came home Dad was watching a college football game. When it was over I looked for the Cal Bear game, and we watched that. It turned out to be a great game with Cal getting an upset win over Washington. Then it was time for the World Series game, and we joked about all the sports we were watching.

On Sunday Dad had coffee at the table on our backyard deck and enjoyed the great weather. Margaret did some shopping, including for Dad, and then made Tuna salad sandwiches for all of us, which we ate on the deck.

Orchard Supply Hardware (OSH) is closing all their stores (we're very sad to see them go) so we decided to see if they had anything we needed. Dad said he would join us. They had a 12' x 10' aluminum gazebo we had been admiring for about a year, and 50% off was a great deal. We won't assemble it this year, since we wouldn't use it much, but we're looking forward to having it next year.

Margaret had set the 49er game to record, so when we got home we watched it. In the 4th quarter, when the 49ers had a comfortable lead, and not much time was left, I worried that they might lose since they seemed to lose steam in the 4th quarter. Sure enough, they lost. I'm considering taking a break from the 49ers the rest of the year.

After the game I drove Dad home with Katie joining us (she wanted to go to Mel's Diner for dinner, but we went to In-N-Out on the way home). We put the groceries that Margaret bought in the refrigerator. I wrote a couple of checks to pay Dad's bills (using the stamp for the signature). I also found that he was only putting 1 pill each day for the pill box when some days he should have 1 1/2. I fixed those, and also taped the amount each day to the hutch in the dining room. Dad said it was okay to put it there, but we'll see how long it lasts. I just hope it's kept somewhere.

Dad was confused by one bill that said, "No Payment Due" since he had apparently overpaid. He handed the bill to me a couple of times, and I explained that he didn't need to pay, then I put the bill in the "Paid Bills" envelope. He also thought he should pay the property taxes for the cabin and house, but I pointed out those 2nd payments were due next year, and put the bills in the drawer with his checkbook. I'm going to talk with him about having automatic bill pay, and we can print the monthly statements so he can see.

Until next time.

Howard Update 10/15

By Kevin

I had dinner with Dad Friday night after driving from work in Alameda (about 45 minutes with traffic). First we stopped by his bank so he could deposit the rent check from his tennant, and take out some money. Then we went to one of his favorite restaurants, Fatapple’s. He couldn’t remember the name, but when he said it was “up the hill” I knew what he meant. I was impressed by how well Dad was using his right hand that was injured. He picked up his water glass with just his right hand, and used his right hand to eat. I mentioned it and he said he was able to use it much more. He has been doing the physical therapy exercises his therapists have recommended.

When we arrived at my home, I showed Dad the new hand grip I had installed near our front steps to make it easier for him to walk up them. He really liked it, and thought I didn’t need to install one on the other side as I had planned.

Saturday morning Margaret made pancakes and we all, including Katie, who usually doesn’t like being outside due to her fear of insects, ate them sitting outside on our deck since the weather was so nice. We left at 1pm for Costco for Dad’s hearing aids to be examined at 2pm. Margaret had made the appointment, and planned to shop while Dad and I were at the hearing aid center. One hearing aid wasn’t working, and we thought it would be good to check the other. While Katie and I waited, the audiologist cleaned both Dad’s hearing aids and Dad said they were working fine. The audiologist recommended that we have the hearing aids cleaned periodically, which we’ll plan to do when he comes down to visit us.

When we got home, Dad and I decided to watch the Cal game. We were disappointed by Cal’s performance, to say the least. Margaret made spaghetti, and we watched the end of Mama Mia! when Dad saw it was playing. Katie has a thing about the movie “The Shining,” and wanted to know if Dad would want to watch it (it’s on Netflix). I asked her to ask him, and he said no. He’s not a fan of horror movies.

Margaret and I talked with Dad about Thanksgiving week, and that Margaret and I will be taking vacation Monday through Wednesday. We invited him to come down early in the week for Thanksgiving festivities. He liked the idea.

Sunday morning we had our coffee with an apple strudel Margaret had bought. Then Dad and I took Buster to the Milpitas Dog Park. Dad likes watching the dogs and the hang gliders and paragliders that practice and takeoff and land in view of the dog park. There were no dogs in the small dog area of the dog park when we arrived, but a few showed up, and Buster played with one by letting it chase him. I’m glad I was able to take some video.

Dad was meeting a friend at Dad’s house at 2:30pm Sunday, which I reminded him about, so I drove him home. His friend invited him to go to the reunion of El Cerrito High class of 1959. When we arrived at Dad’s I helped him get dressed (I reminded him that his friend was arriving soon, and he might want to change). I cleaned out his refrigerator of expired food while he finished getting dressed and waited for his friend. After half an hour, we thought he might not be coming, but Dad didn’t have his number, and Dad’s answering machine had been full for a few days, so he couldn’t have left a message. I checked Dad’s phone’s list of missed calls and found his friend’s name, so we called him. His wife answered and said that Dad’s friend had planned to have lunch with Dad, but when Dad didn’t answer, he decided to just go to the reunion.

I helped Dad pay some bills by writing out the checks, which is still a little difficult for him to do, then using his signature stamp to sign them (he got the stamp when his right hand was so badly injured that he couldn’t write with it). I put the letters in a mailbox on my way home.

I saw that his prescription was running out so I ordered a refill, wrote when it would be available on his calendar, and told him about it. I will also call the caregiver Wednesday morning to let him know. I also left a paper with his current daily dosages so the caregiver knows how much to put in his weekly pill box.

I helped him put together a grocery list for the caregiver to get, or get when going with Dad to the store. Dad likes to browse, and will see things like donut holes that he gets.

I also played the messages on his answering machine to show him that he had messages. He thought he didn’t have any messages, but he didn’t have any new messages. It seems that he’s forgotten how to erase messages after he hears them. Another task we’ll need to do when we visit him. I set a code on his answering machine so I can use it remotely. That way when he is visiting us I can check his messages with him, and delete old messages.

Except for Dad missing the reunion, and Cal’s poor football performance, it was a very good weekend of both fun and tasks completed.

Howard Update 9/16

By Kevin

Katie and I visited my Dad today (Sunday). Margaret had things to do at home. We arrived around noon with sandwiches, grapes (some of Dad's favorites), and Oreos from the nearby Safeway to have lunch and watch the 49er game. I told him I had something from Margaret and gave him a hug she asked me to give him. I took the grapes off the vines and put them in a bowl since with only one hand, it's difficult for Dad to take them off the vines.

His right hand is still swollen, but not as much as it was. He doesn't keep it up above his heart, as the doctors asked. He either keeps it on the chair's arm rest, or sometimes hangs it down. He still has the foam cushion to use to keep his hand up.

I checked Dad's pills and he had taken AM&PM for Friday and Saturday, but PM for Sunday (should have just been AM). He said that he took out both AM&PM pills, saw he had an extra big pill (antacid), so he put the big pill back (but in the AM not PM).

Dad showed me an extra book that Karen and Fiona sent him, so I took it as Karen asked.

Dad still had leftovers from Friday night (I took him to Christopher's) and he said he would have them for dinner tonight. I also noticed on Friday that he had some packages from Meals on Wheels, so the social worker was able to sign him up. He said they come around lunch time and bring lunch.

He had a lot of other leftovers (pizza, sandwiches, etc.), but I couldn't tell how old they were. We're going to have Post-It notes to identify the dates as much as we can. He only ate half his sandwich so I put the other half in the refrigerator.

The 49er game was exciting, and it wasn't clear who would win until the final seconds.

Katie and I left after the game, and Dad said he appreciated us coming to visit.

Howard Update 9/1

* post by Margaret *

Howard is doing well, and has been able to stay at his house.   We are getting services for him, and it is giving him a busy schedule!   As of today, he has the following coming by at least once per week (some twice per week) - skilled nursing, physical therapist, occupational therapist, social worker, and home health care.   The home health care will help with bathing, food prep, housework, and also will be able to take him to appointments.  Kaiser now comes to his house for monthly coumidin blood draws, so he does not need to go out for that.   We have made sure he has the time available for coffee with his friends. He is in good spirits, and seems to okay with it all.  He does have moments where he is not remembering some facts, but otherwise is doing well.

We were all (Pat, Karen, Kevin and I) over today to spend the day with him, and also to solidify the home health care details.    We all went to lunch, then went to Bed Bath and Beyond to get some items for his shower to make it more secure for him.    Karen did the laundry and the dishes.   I cleaned the bathroom.

As this is the Labor Day weekend and we have Monday off, he has come back down to Milpitas until Monday.  We are just going to relax and have a nice visit.

We have agreed that we will trade off weekends of visiting and checking in on him, take him grocery shopping, out for a meal, etc.

Jack Update 8/22

By Kevin

Sorry I didn't send this earlier, but I think we contacted everyone after we heard the news.

Uncle Jack passed away Monday night the 20th of August. He was in hospice care at the Mountain's Edge Hospital in Las Vegas, where he had been since the 30th of July. He was admitted for his brain tumors, though his partner Shirley took him to the hospital after he fell and broke some ribs. Shirley wrote that when she visited him the next day, on the 31st, that was the last time he recognized her. Nearly every day since she would visit him, but he had stopped speaking, and when he opened his eyes would just look straight ahead.

His son David visited him in the hospital August 2nd and 3rd. Jack at first didn't recognize David, but later did. Jack said he wasn't in pain, due to the pain medication, but he was acting like nothing was wrong. He was sleeping a lot.

The Last Time We Saw Jack

On Friday July 20th at about 5:30pm Jack and Shirley arrived at my Dad's house after Shirley drove them all day from Las Vegas. I was there to go with Dad to see his doctor about Dad's right hand injury, and get Dad's permission to be his caregiver (have access to his medical records, and be able to send and receive messages with his doctors).

Jack was very talkative, and Shirley later commented on how she hadn't seen him that way. I'm not sure if it was due to his medical condition, but he was more talkative than I remembered.

Jack had hoped to enroll in Kaiser healthcare, and find a surgeon in San Francisco who could remove his brain tumors. A surgeon Jack consulted with in Las Vegas said the best surgeons to do Jack's operation were in San Francisco. But Jack didn't have an appointment with a surgeon, and not even the name of a surgeon, though we later found that he did. It seemed he expected Dad to drive him to San Francisco to meet with surgeons. He hadn't called Dad or he would have found out that Dad was no longer allowed to drive, and had severely injured his right hand.

Shirley had planned to leave early Sunday, with or without Jack, but Saturday morning, when only Jack, Shirley, and I were up, Jack discussed the situation (Dad's inability to drive and injury) with Shirley and decided to leave with Shirley on Sunday. Once my Dad was up Saturday morning, I suggested we all have breakfast at IHOP just down the hill. Shirley's car was in the car port, so I parked my car on the street, but even then it was difficult for Jack to get to the car with his walker and get in.

We each had a great breakfast, with Jack eating so much that Shirley joked he would soon be falling asleep, and he did seem tired. He predicted that the morning fog would disappear at 11am, as it always did in El Cerrito, but it was a little earlier that we started to see a lot of blue sky.

I decided that since it had been so difficult to get everyone in my car, we would take advantage of being out and do some sightseeing. I think Jack suggested seeing the house on C street where they had lived, so I drove us there. In all this time I hadn't been there! Jack talked about the park across the street, some things about the house, and the kids who had lived nearby.

Since El Cerrito High School was close by, and Jack may not have seen it since the remodel, I thought we would go there next. Jack was disappointed that the "E C" spelled out in hedges had been taken out. He didn't recognize much other than where the gym is. I also drove around the back so we could see the football and track field. As we started to head back to Dad's, I asked Jack if he had any stories about the neighborhood we were driving through, and he said it wasn't one of his old stomping grounds.

When we got back home, we sat around and chatted a little.

After driving through a lot of traffic, Margaret arrived and was able to spend some time with Jack and Shirley. We had met Shirley on our last family trip to Las Vegas several years ago.

Margaret invited Dad to stay a while at our house in Milpitas. I wanted to make sure that Margaret invited him so he would know that she wanted him to stay, and she could say how excited she was about the changes she had made. She had converted her first floor craft room into a bedroom for Dad, and had it all set up for him. She had setup part of our bedroom for her crafts. Dad said a visit sounded good and he would come down with me when I left on Sunday. Margaret stayed a while and talked with Jack and Shirley. Dad had gone to the bathroom just before Margaret thought she should leave, so she asked us to say goodbye for her.

A little while later is when Dad had his second big fall that I described in another blog post. Jack wasn't sure why Dad and I were quickly leaving (for the ER), but Shirley explained it to him. I gave Shirley a quick hug since I didn't know if we would be able to say goodbye before she left the next morning.

When Dad and I returned from the ER around 8:30pm, Shirley had gone to bed in the front bedroom, and Jack was sleeping on the living room sofa. Dad walked over to Jack, but I was worried he would wake Jack. But he wanted to say goodbye. Jack was still awake, and saw Dad's bandage on his left arm. Jack looked at me and asked if Dad was okay, and I gave a thumbs up, not knowing how well Jack could hear me. Jack told Dad a good way for him to keep his balance is to have his arms out like a tightrope walker, and that Jack does that. Jack put his arms out to demonstrate and said "keep your balance, keep your balance!" That's the last image I have of Jack.

Howard Update 8/18

By Kevin

I spent most of Saturday (8/18) with Dad. There was a San Francisco Pelican Fleet 1 race that day, and I had decided to start the races since I didn't think Dad could (he still can't use his right hand), and he has been the Race Committee for several years. No one from Fleet 1 replied to my email asking for someone to run the race.

I called Dad on Friday and reminded him that I would be stopping by his house Saturday morning around 9. He asked why, and I reminded him about the Pelican race, and that I would pick up the flags, horn, and other things necessary for running the race. I asked him if he would like to go to the race. He said not being able to drive would make it difficult for him to go, and I said I could drive him there when I pick up the race stuff. He said he thought he would go, and would get the race stuff ready.

I arrived at 9:30 (called him at 9:15 to say I would be late) and everything was ready to go, but I notice his right hand is swollen again. (I also notice that the planters have been moved that I had placed to block the path he has fallen on twice. Not sure if the gardener did it, and if Dad asked him to. I leave them where they are.) The last time I saw his right hand the swelling had gone down. He said he hasn't been keeping it up above his heart. He wanted to pay me for his bills that Margaret paid (I brought them so he would file them). He can't write his signature to write checks, so we have been paying his bills. I didn't know the total, it would take some time to add it up, and I was anxious to get to the race, so I told him we could do it when we returned.

After I loaded the race stuff in the car and we drove away, he says he hasn't had breakfast and would like to stop somewhere. I suggested the nearby McDonald's drive-through, and he thought that would be fine. He ate the Egg McMuffin and Sausage in the car, and saved the large coffee for when it had cooled.

We arrive at the Marina Bay Yacht Harbor around 10, and walk over to the launch ramp, but don't see any Pelicans in the large parking lot. Then one arrived, and we saw another and said hello. We also see a member who told me Friday night he could help with the races. We setup chairs and the race stuff away from the ramp near the place we will use for the start line. We race inside the marina's breakwater, which has a lot of room. There are 4 boats that will race. Dad didn't bring a hat so I give him one of mine. As I put on sunscreen I ask him if he wants any and he says he doesn't, though he's sure to get a burn since we're sitting in the sun.

The first race goes well, but it gets so windy, and the waves are splashing in their faces, that one skipper decides to call it quits.

We all get together for bag lunches. Everyone says hello to Dad, and he tells them about injuring his right hand, and shows his swollen hand. He shakes people's hands with his left hand. People talk about racing, the upcoming race at Tomales Bay, electric cars, etc. I have Dad sit near people so he can hear better, but he doesn't join in the conversations. I'm not sure if he can hear them. One person comes over to sit by Dad and talk with him, which was very nice.

I brought an extra sandwich for Dad, but he says he's not hungry. I have a water bottle to give him since he's finished his coffee, and will probably be thirsty.

For the second race it's still too windy (10mph with gusts over that) for one skipper and crew, so they sit it out, and decide it's not going to get calmer, so take their boat out.

For the third race, one skipper needs to head home, so they take their boat out. They had offered the skipper duties to the guy helping me run the race, but he's too nervous about the high winds and sailing an unfamiliar boat. The third race ends up being a tie-breaker for the remaining boats that had been tied for 2nd.

After loading up the car, Dad decides to stay at the car rather than walking the 100 yards or so to say goodbye with me to people getting their boats ready to leave.

When we return to Dad's house, I tell him I'll keep the race flags, etc. with me in case he doesn't want to go to the next race. He agrees that's a good idea, but says he would like to go to the next local race at Half Moon Bay since he enjoys watching the kids playing on the beach.

He wants to pay me for the bills Margaret paid by having me write his name on one of his checks. I tell him I'd rather not do that since it's not legal, and we can either wait for him to be able to write his name (or a reasonable facsimile) or he can go to his bank and get cash and give it to us sometime.

While he's in the bathroom I put a spare house key in a lock box like realtors use that the medical alert people supplied. I put it around the kitchen door knob. If Dad activates the system (he has an emergency button in bedroom, in the bathroom, and in the kitchen on the base unit) they will give the combination to first responders so they don't need to break down the door. I show it to him, and describe how it's used, and he thinks it's a good idea.

I also give him a device Margaret found on Amazon that will help him put on his socks. Dad had told us how difficult it is to get his socks on. He takes a look at the pictures on the box, and thinks it will be a big help.

I update his calendar with the blood draw that a nurse will do at his home on Monday, and an appointment he has on Friday in Richmond with a surgeon about his hand. I point out the appointments, and plan to call him Thursday to remind him about the Friday appointment since I think it could be important to healing his hand.

He asks me to open a couple of his pill bottles, and I see he's not taking the pills from the weekly pill holder we gave him. It seems he's just in the habit of taking pills from the bottles. I forget to do the usual check for spoiled food in his refrigerator, and check to see if he's eating the frozen dinners Margaret got for him. But I asked him if he needs any groceries (Margaret can have them delivered) and he says he's fine.

I ask him if he'd like to go to dinner, and he says he's hungry, so we get in my car and I ask him where he'd like to go. He says I can get on the freeway and head North. He says a couple of times during the day that he appreciates me spending nearly a full day with him.

I ask him if he has thought any more about going to Boulder City (a week or so ago he said he wanted to go there before he died). He laughs and says no. I ask him if he'd like to fly, or I could drive. He says he doesn't need to go there, and jokes that he shouldn't mention things like that to me. I ask him if he doesn't want to go to Boulder City if there is a place he'd like to go, and he just laughs.

I follow his directions to a Sizzler, and he says he doesn't know why he can't remember the name, which is why he didn't tell me sooner. One of the cashiers recognizes him and he orders a healthy chicken dinner with a potato and a salad (though he asks for butter and sour cream on the potato, and puts lots of ranch dressing on the salad, but it's what he likes to eat). I order the same without the extras.

I have us sit where we can watch the Oakland Raider game over each other's shoulders (I make sure he's sitting closer to one of the screens). When the food arrives I cut up his chicken and only half of his potato since he thinks that's all he'll eat.

I ask him how old he was when he lived at Bolder City and after thinking for a while he says 7 or 8. I asked him what Grandfather did while there, and he said Grandfather worked on the trucks, which is what I remembered. I asked him about playing in the water around the trees, which I remembered him describing, and he said there were troughs around the planted trees that would be filled with water, and they would play in the mud. I asked him about swimming in the Colorado river, and he just said he did. I asked if the current was very strong, and he said it wasn't where they were. I asked him if he remembered the address of the house he lived in, and he said he never wrote letters there, so he didn't remember. I told him there was a museum there, and they may have records that would tell where he lived.

He didn't want to take home the half of the potato he didn't eat, but gave his leftover chicken to me to add to my leftovers. He mentions how messy an eater Katie was when she was a baby, and says he has gotten that way, though I don't say that it's not easy to be right-handed and eat a salad with your left hand!

When we get back to his place he says I should probably get going home since it will be a long trip (usually about an hour and 15 minutes), so we say goodbye and I leave.

Howard Update 8/14

From an email from Karen:

Monday night brought dinner over to Howard, a totally different person from Saturday!

His hand is not swollen, I asked how'd that happen? Howard said, "I kept it up all the time on the cushion." (haha kind of funny).

He was talkative and moving around pretty good..

Took his pills,

Fiona and I  brought him dinner, so he was feeling good about trading in his turkey sandwich for meatloaf and salad. I even snuck in zucchini in the meatloaf. He'll never know.
Even tried the Lemon Cucumber! Lincoln [their dog] came as well and was more than happy to clean up carpet.

He had a pie, that I sliced up for future for him, he had some of that and whip cream.

Cleaned up a bit (threw out the nasty sponges - my main goal really was to throw those out) and left new ones.

While there the PT [physical therapist] called to set up appt for tomorrow at 10 am. Name is Danny.

He knows that Hildegard is coming tomorrow too, as well he is supposed to go over to Oakland for 1:30 aptt. He raved about the GogoGrandparent.

Something confused me he said last night and tonight was about this couple who had a 95th Birthday on Kensington. Did he go to a party yesterday?

That was not clear, but he was in good spirits,

He had coffee, like at least two cups today...Coffee is key.

Howard Update 8/13

By Kevin

I called Dad after his Friday doctor's appointment and he was discouraged. The doctor said he needed to flex the joints in his right hand all the time or his hand will freeze in place. He half-jokingly said that he might be able to get along with one hand.

Last week when he was at our place on Tuesday, I played a VHS tape he had given me to record to DVD so he could watch it at home (he doesn't have a VHS player any longer). The tape had a documentary about the building of Boulder/Hoover dam, and had some scenes of Boulder City, where Dad had lived with his parents and Zell and Jack while his father maintained trucks used to build the dam. Dad surprised me by saying he'd like to go back to Boulder City. I later mentioned that I would work on it, and he said he would like to go back before he died. I've been looking into places to stay, and the museum (where they would like to do an oral history with him). We'll probably fly to Vegas then I'll drive us to Boulder City.

Pat and Karen took Dad out for dinner on Friday, and were concerned that his right hand was swollen again, and he hadn't been taking his medicines. Pat and Karen found the medicines and the doctor's requests to stop taking certain medications. They sorted out his medicines with Dad, and put the weekly pill container on his dining room table where he usually sits to read the paper and have breakfast. They regretted not taking Dad to the emergency room to have his hand examined, but he will be seeing a doctor on Tuesday.

Karen and Fiona will bring Dad some dinner on Monday, and see how he's doing.

Since using this blog to do updates on Howard, it has re-energized my ambition to keep our own family blog going.    I have created a new blog and have started with an update on our trip to Vegas.  If you want to keep up with Kevin, Margaret and Katie, go to mackeycentral.blogspot.com.   We will leave this blog for updates on Howard, Jack, etc.

Howard update 8/10

~~ Update by Margaret ~~

Katie and I took Howard back to El Cerrito yesterday, and settled him in.   He has a doctor's appointment this morning at Kaiser, and Kevin just received a text from Gogograndparent that a ride had been requested.   So he is up and doing well today.

Yesterday we stopped at the grocery store and got him set up for a couple of days at the house.   He has another doctor appointment on Tuesday.  I went through all of his mail yesterday, and brought home about 5 pounds of junk mail.   I will have Katie go through it all to save the nickles, stamps, notepads, pens, etc., that are enclosed.    I also brought home his bills so we can pay them - he still cannot use his right hand for signature, so we told him to practice writing and when he can sign his name again we will have him write us a check.

He was able to take a real shower at our house, as he was unable to do so for the prior weeks because of stitches, balance, etc.   No problems.

At his last visit I had bought him new pajamas and tshirts, which he seems to be enjoying.   I also have done laundry for him.

He still has occasional incontinence problems, and also cannot put on his socks.   We are ordering for him the easy on / easy off tool for him so he can solve the socks issue.

His friends are trying to keep up with him - one of them called yesterday while we were there.

Pat and Karen are working on daily home health care for him.  Kaiser provides 35 hours per week, which would be perfect for him.   Kaiser will also have home visits for his coumadin blood draw which he does every couple of weeks.

Howard updated 8/7

~~ Update by Margaret ~~

Howard is doing well today.  He was up early - 8am-ish - so he was able to see Kevin off to work.  I had already made him a cup of coffee, but he got his breakfast himself.

His hand is doing much better.   He has been good about keeping it up as the doctor instructed, and there has been no swelling for a couple of days.    We've been good about making sure it is soaked twice per day.

I had to take him to Kaiser in Fremont to have some blood work done.   He was very steady and walking well.   He did not want to take the walker, and today he did not need it.   He had no problem getting in our out of the car, or fastening his seat belt.   We even teased Katie that her 92-year-old grandpa kept getting out the car faster than she did.    The blood draw was easy, and then we went to Chili's in Fremont.   His hearing and cognizance was good.   We chatted a bit, but it was noisy in there so we really could not converse.

I was concerned yesterday because he slept most of the day, but today he is chipper and engaged.  He is napping a bit now as we just got back from Chili's, and he ate his full bacon cheeseburger, so I would expect him to nap. 😊

Pat and Karen are working on home healthcare for him, and we will post updates on that when the info is available.

Jack Update 8/6

By Kevin

No news since last Saturday (August 4th) when I last exchanged text messages with David (I think I spoke with him on Thursday, though my phone log doesn't have that, though I do have his text messages).

David arrived on Thursday and visited Uncle Jack in the hospital. He said Jack was very alert, but acting strange. David thinks it might be the pain medications. Jack was acting like there was nothing wrong with him. Jack says he's not in pain, but he sleeps a lot. David saw no sign or Shirley.

On Friday, David was having high blood pressure problems, and planned to leave for Oakland on Saturday.

On Saturday around noon David said he was doing much better and would call me later with an update on Jack. But he didn't call.

I sent a text message to David around 6pm Sunday, but didn't hear back.

Resting and enjoying a root beer, popcorn, and American Pickers.  Doing well.

Howard update 8/5

~~ Update by Margaret ~~

It is Sunday, and Howard came down yesterday and will be with us until Thursday.

On Thursday (8/2) Howard's hand and wrist were still swollen, so his coffee buddy took him by Kaiser emergency to have it examined.   The doctors were concerned about the swelling and so he was admitted and given lots of antibiotics and TLC.   Apparently a couple of foreign objects (we are guessing shards from his coffee cup from when he fell and cut his hand) were still in his hand and they were considering surgery.    He spent two nights under observation, and was released on Saturday.   Pat was there to get him when he was released, and Kevin came as well.

They took Howard out to lunch and then Kevin brought him down to Milpitas.

His hand is looking much better, and he has all stitches out of both his hand and his forearm.  He needs to soak his hand twice per day for one week, and has antibiotics.

I (Margaret) am home all week and will be making sure he gets lots of TLC and as much coffee as he wants.

8/1 update

Planned to visit dad on Wednesday August 1 for dinner. Left work at 3:00, left home at 3:45 arrived at the house around 5:30. Connie (the tenant) was at the door with her rent check. She introduced herself and said she was concerned about dad’s hand being swollen.
She gave him her check and left. Dad said he was hungry I suggested we eat at Christopher’s (a Mexican restraint that mom liked).
He said the coffee machine still wasn’t working and he had it unplugged. It looked like to wanted to continue the rinse cycle so I put more water in it and a bowl under it and we left.
We took the explorer and he didn’t have trouble getting to the car or getting in, but some trouble with the seat belt.
He directed me to the restaurant, navigate the parking lot and the step into the restaurant, placed his order - all good. We ate and got back to the house.

The coffee machine wanted another rinse cycle(!) so we started that.
He saw he had a message from his coffee buddy about their meetup tomorrow. He said he wanted to go to the dr about his hand after his coffee thing.

I asked him about the box that came which was the Bay Alarm “life alert” kit. I set that up and tested it out. I told the agent who answered the test call hat it was a test, but he wanted to talk to dad to make sure all was okay. Dad answered him and the. The agent said something like “thanks for choosing Bay alarm, if you have any trouble....etc. and expected an answer from dad. He couldn’t make out what was said because the guy spoke so fast. When dad said “ I didn’t understand” he qagent repeated his spiel REALLY LOUD. Of course it was less intelligible so I asked him to speak slower -  which he did but EVEN LOUDER which a) didn’t seem possible and b) didn’t help. Dad shook his head but did say some thanks - which the guy took as an answer and hung up. I was glad that was over.

In the box, besides the (very loud) main unit,  was -
- a bracelet - dad didn’t want to wear it, so I put t in the bedroom on the headboard
- a pendant - I put this on one of the handrails inthe bathroom
- a lock box - dad didn’t have a spare key, so we left that for later
- mini medical summary ona fridge magnet - this is for the emergency people can have the info they need. We left that for later
- a form to tell the bay alarm folks where the key is, pills dads taking, etc. Also saved for later.

Dad tested the pendant from the bathrooms and it worked. I made real sure the call didn’t go through to the agent.

The coffee machine was (finally) done and we ran a couple of test cups which he pronounced good (looked to weak to me but whatever.

I told him I’d calll him tomorrow and said goodbye.

Jack Update 7/30

By Kevin

On our way to Las Vegas for much needed R&R, I had a call from a nurse who needed to reach cousin David to have him sign papers for Jack. Jack’s phone was missing since Jack and Shirley are moving, so my phone number might have been found on Shirley’s phone or the note I had left at my Dad's that Jack kept.

Found out later from David, who is in Texas for work, that Jack fell and broke 2 ribs. Jack was confused and couldn't admit himself to the hospital in Las Vegas (20 minutes from where Margaret, Katie, and I are staying). David gave permission for Shirley to sign the papers only for that. Jack is being given hospice care which his insurance covers. Jack was given pain medication, and when asked what year it was said 2028. The nurse later said Jack was doing better, so David decided to fly to Vegas on Friday to see how his dad is doing and what else can be done. Jack had planned to have an operation for his brain tumor, but that doesn't seem possible now.

He is at Mountains Edge Hospital 8656 West Patrick Lane, Las Vegas, room 205. #702 671 1111, but he might not be taking calls.

7/29 update

Called dad around 1:00 Sunday. He sounded like he just got up. I asked him if I could come over that afternoon. Got there around 5:00. He was in good spirits and both hearing aids are working - yay. He had bandages on his right hand and left forearm and his right hand is swollen.

After some stories about Paris (I didn’t realize he saw so much there after the war...) we went through Kevin’s list.
- his phone was on the table charging
- he knew about his Dr. appt in Monday but only mentioned having his stitches out
- I asked him to ask the Dr. about a walker and the visiting caregiver - we think he needs a prescription/sign off for both. He seemed excited about the walker mentioning how Jack and his coffee buddy use them.  He also liked the idea of the home care. He planned to use gogograndparent to get there and back and was confident that he could do it.
- I asked about his pills and he said he is taking them and the pill by date box helps. I meant to check the box when I used the bathroom, but didn't...
- We then tore apart the coffee maker to fix it. It was full of hardened grounds and oily residue.  He used his left hand in this process and handled things pretty well. I think it should work well now, but we had it running through a de-calcium process which seemed to take forever. It was still going when I left. I'll ask him how it worked when I call him tonight.
- He said he didn't have any laundry and both the washer and dryer were empty
- I checked his freezer and fridge - it was pretty full - more than mine.  I was going to drop by Safeway on the way back from dinner to have him get some things, but he seemed okay.

He picked a dinner spot (Applebee's - which wouldn't have been my first choice - or any choice for that matter).  I decided to take the explorer rather than his prius to see how well he could handle getting in and out of a car on the steep street. He did good. He even navigated the parking lot at Applebee's and the 3 steps to our table just fine. He ordered finger food and tried eating the "all you could eat" chicken strips with a fork in his left hand which was too much trouble. I told him he could use his fingers. He snatched up the bill before I could even reach for it.

Back at the house, I saw the broken coffee mug on the storage bin out front and noticed the blood spots on the landing. He explained how it happened and that he doesn't want to put in a ramp. I noticed the line of potted plants there and he said Kevin did that in a way that makes me think he may move them...

He thanked me for coming over and I reminded him of his appointment said I'd call him Monday.

PS: Just sent him a text to remind him of his Dr. appt.

Howard Update 7/28

Katie and I (Kevin) had a good visit with my Dad on Saturday.

We had hoped to meet Pat at Dad's for dinner, but I had a long talk with Pat in the morning after a long flight back from vacation, and he plans to see Dad on Sunday.

We delivered some orange juice that Margaret got for him, and more bandages if he needs them.

We used GoGoGrandparent to go to dinner at Fatapple's in El Cerrito. Dad is still getting familiar with the phone and using GoGoGrandparent, but we expect with more practice he will use it for things like hospital appointments and dinner out. We had a good dinner, and Katie now has a new favorite place for burgers near Dad's (the old place was Mel's Diner in San Pablo). Dad had a little trouble eating his trout with one hand, and his left one at that, but he did well.

I had hoped that the Bay Alarm Medical alert system would arrive since UPS listed it for Saturday delivery, but it should arrive Monday, and Pat will set it up. It has a wrist band with a button to call for help, and a pendant to detect falls.

Dad has an appointment on Monday with his doctor, and I wrote it on Dad's calendar. I will send an email to his doctor asking him to:

- remove the stitches from Dad's right hand and left arm (the doctor knows about this)
- examine both wounds
- talk with Dad about last Saturday's fall, and do any tests he can, including checking for a stroke since his coffee friends said one time a few weeks ago he was speaking and they couldn't understand what he was saying
- give Dad a prescription for a walker (he can get one from the same hospital as his doctor)
- make what arrangements he can for Dad to have home health care

Pat and Karen are going to look into home health care and transportation options in addition to or instead of GoGoGrandparent.

He hadn't taken his Saturday morning medications, so I gave them to him.

Margaret and I are glad that Pat and Karen will be available to help Dad so we can enjoy our vacation.

Howard Update 7/27

Kevin spent Thursday evening and all day Friday with Howard.

Kevin went up to El Cerrito after work on Thursday and took Howard out to dinner and grocery shopping.   They were unable to use Gogograndparent as the phone needed to be charged.    Howard had not had coffee with his friends as there was a miscommunication about logistics.

He is mobile but unsteady.   He had changed his clothes in the morning on Thursday.  Kevin changed his bandages on his sutures.

Howard had a rescheduled coffee with his friends on Friday morning.  His friend (Barbara's old schoolmate) and wife came and picked up Howard.  His friend reported after coffee that Howard should be using a walker.

Kevin made an appointment for Monday for Howard to see his regular doctor.  On Friday, using Gogograndparent (one round trip),  Kevin took Howard to Kaiser for bloodwork (which he had missed because he was with us in Milpitas and we were unaware he does frequent bloodwork).   They were unable to have the stitches removed as the nurse saw a note in the file that the doctor wanted to do that himself on the Monday appointment.

Kevin now has proxy access to Howard's online medical account with Kaiser, and will been sending messages to the doctor.  Howard will need a doctor's referral to get a walker, in home care, etc.

He has a cane and is using it sparingly, and we encourage more.  We will get the doctor referral for a walker.

The medical alert is due to arrive at Howard's house on Saturday.   Pat will be setting it up for Howard.

Kevin cleaned out his refrigerator and also blocked the area in the front patio where Howard has tripped and had two falls.

Kevin will be going up on Saturday to meet with Pat and visit Howard.  Kevin has both the keys to Howard's car and and will give one to Pat.

Howard update 7/25

Howard is doing good today.   He got up around 10:30am, and is in good spirits.

Katie and I will be taking him back to El Cerrito this afternoon.  We presented this trip to our house as a couple of days vacation away from his house, and also so he could see what we are trying to put in place for him.

He has enjoyed sitting out in our backyard, and went straight out there after getting up.   I took him out some coffee, cereal and grapes.   He is getting much better at eating left handed!  :)  He is speaking clearly.

He is still in the same shirt he was in yesterday, and same pants as for many days.   I have been trying, with no luck, to get him to take a shower, and he said he would take one when he gets home.  I will probably hang around his house until that is done!

Kevin has ordered a medical alert for Howard, and it should arrive at Howard's house on Friday.  Pat gets back in to town on Friday and can get it set up for him.    The medical alert does have fall detection.

Howard is supposed to be picked up by his coffee buddies tomorrow for his usual Thursday coffee-out-with-the-boys.   Kevin will be going over there after work tomorrow to check in with him, and also to take him in to Kaiser on Friday for a follow up on everything.

*** Major kudos to Kevin for stepping up more than admirably.  ***

Kevin, Katie and I will be out of town all of next week, and hope to have Howard visiting back at our house on the week of August 6.

Howard update 7/24

Morning update:

Howard got up around 11:15 this morning.   He is in good spirits, had changed his shirt, and got himself a cup of coffee and a banana.   At the moment he is sitting out in the backyard with Buster.  Katie and I were out when he got up, but arrived when he was sitting at the kitchen table with his coffee and banana.

I am encouraged as he is conversing normally again.  We had a few days where he didn't say much, and was just "yes" or "no".   I am sure this has been hard for him to process all that is going on with him.

We were unable to get him a shower or sponge bath yesterday.   That is one of my goals for today (yes, I live the exciting life!).

I will also be researching Kaiser home care today to see what that offers.

Howard update 7/23

Margaret's update, Monday 7/23

Howard came down to our house with Kevin yesterday, Saturday.   We have the downstairs bedroom and bathroom set up for him.

Howard will be with us through Wednesday afternoon, when Katie and I will take him back to El Cerrito.  His coffee buddies will be picking him up on Thursday for his usual coffee out.

His hearing aids are cleaned and repaired, so he is hearing well when he has them on.

He is getting around only okay.

He has difficulty getting up out of chairs, etc., and needs to sit in stiff backed armed chairs.    He has edema in his feet and his feet are swollen.  He wears only his slippers and black sneakers unlaced.   He is unable to put on his socks.

He has stitches in his right palm and the hand is bandage wrapped.  So he is using a fork with his left hand which he is not used to.   And, his left forearm has the stitches from when he fell.  As a result, he cannot use a knife, trouble lifting cups and glasses.   Luckily we have lots of straws here. :)

We have the suspicion that he might have had a minor stroke.  A few days ago he was confused and unintelligible.   He seems better from that, but is still struggling.   He wears the same clothes every day and does not want to change out of them.  He had a bathroom accident on Saturday, so at least Kevin got to wash his clothes for him.   We're pretty sure he hasn't bathed in a couple of weeks, so we are going to get him at least a sponge bath today.

We will post updates at least daily, and also let Pat and Karen be authors on this blog as well.

Howard update 7/21

Kevin's email from Saturday, July 21

Dad fell Saturday about 5pm while in his bathroom and cut his left arm severely in the area between his wrist and elbow. I think he hit the sharp edge of the counter. He had just gotten up and gotten dressed and thinks he tripped. But he also said he felt light-headed. When I asked him later he was not sure what happened. Fortunately there wasn't much bleeding and Shirley and I were able to get gauze and bandages on. I was able to lift him on to his feet and after quick good-byes to Shirley and Jack, who plan to leave for home 6am tomorrow, I drove him to the correct emergency room (for his insurance) at Kaiser Richmond.

He is doing good and said he has a million stitches. We need to change the dressing every day and look for signs of infection.

After getting his other hearing aid from Costco at 4pm, Margaret and I had talked with Dad about staying with us, and he had agreed to leave with me tomorrow (Sunday) to try it out. We have a Kaiser hospital not far from us and planned to have him see a surgeon there to find out if he will need surgery on the cut on his right hand.

Howard Update 7/18

Kevin's email from Wednesday, July 18:

(Sorry for the length, but my future writing will be paid by the word.)

I drove to work yesterday (Tuesday) so I could get a simpler phone for my Dad, drive to his place to take him to dinner, setup the phone, and go to an urgent care clinic to have the cut on his right hand, on the palm, looked at.

I had no trouble getting the phone, I setup the phone while he started reading the user manual, then we went to dinner. I made sure to sit on his right side since we found out last Saturday that his left hearing aid wasn't working. We had a good dinner, and before we left I found a nearby urgent care clinic, and told him we could go there. He was agreeable, though he thought all that was needed was to put a new bandage on.

I thought we would be at the clinic for about 30 minutes, but it was shorter than that when they told us that hand injuries can involve ligaments and surgery, and suggested we go to the nearby emergency room (2 blocks away). That was convenient, so we went there without me thinking that his Kaiser Health Plan would consider it an out-of-network expense and charge him too much.

There weren't many people ahead of us (15, compared to 30 or 40 that Margaret and I have seen at our ER) but it took 2 hours (about 10:30pm) or a doctor to see us (triage was soon after we arrived). Shortly before that, Dad said we should leave, but I felt we had invested the time, and I wanted his hand examined since it was swollen and his friends who saw the wound said he should go to a doctor. A nurse removed the bandage, cleaned the wound, another nurse took him for an x-ray of his hand, the doctor put 3 stitches in, and another nurse bandaged it and gave him a wrist splint. He was given 2 prescriptions for antibiotics. We left around 1:30am. I had decided shortly before that that I was too tired to drive home, and would arrive so late that Margaret wouldn't get much sleep. So we went to Dad's and both slept.

I work from home on Wednesdays, so I sent a message to my manager and coworkers that I would be in late. I hoped that my Dad's friends, who had bandaged his hand, could also take him to get his prescriptions. But when he woke up Wednesday, Dad told me that his last working hearing aid wasn't, so I informed my work that I would take the day off.

I helped Dad try to clean the hearing aid, and after writing notes on paper, used my phone's speech to text feature, with a large font, to communicate with him. Then later found an Android app, Talk to Deaf Grandma (TDG) , that was easier to use. As the ER doctor requested, I called his doctor and made an appointment for Thursday morning.

He couldn't get the hearing aid to work. He asked if I was hungry, and suggested breakfast at McDonald's, but with TDG I suggested IHOP. We had a good breakfast with a waitress who recognized him from serving him years ago at another restaurant, then at IHOP. He suggested getting the prescriptions at Walgreens nearby, but after driving there, walking in with him, and waiting, they would not accept Kaiser cards. I TGDed that we'd go to Kaiser, so off we went.

Got the prescriptions, then he thought Kaiser might help with the hearing aids, but he led me to the eye glasses store. We found audiology, but they just did hearing tests. So off to Costco where he had bought the hearing aids.

They cleaned them while I did some shopping for Margaret (and some for me), but couldn't get the right ear one to work. Fortunately, it was under warranty, so they would send it off to be fixed, and call him in a few days. But finally he could hear me through his left ear!!

We headed to his place, and I asked him where he wanted to go to test GoGoGrandparent, a service I signed him up for, and put the number on his new phone, where you can use a non-smart phone to get a ride. He didn't suggest any place.

I gave him his prescriptions, and he had problems opening the bottles (he can't use his right hand much, especially with the splint). He's upset that he needs to take one prescription 4 times a day, but the other is just twice a day. He read all the instructions.

At home, I added the numbers for his friends to his phone, and asked him to try it out. He had lots of problems using it from thinking he could touch the screen, to typing the phone number for GoGoGrandparent (that's shown in the phone book) when he could have it dialed for him by pressing the YES button. We practiced several times, and I'm still not sure he can do it.

He also had problems hearing the recorded instructions from GoGoGrandparent, and hearing Margaret when I asked him to call her. But he just needs to press 1 to request pickup at home, then 2 to be picked up at the place he was dropped off. It's not essential that he see his doctor Thursday, but it will be a good test for him to use GoGoGrandparent. I hope after using it a few times he will be more comfortable with it. It could also be that he hears much better with his right ear, so having that hearing aid fixed will be a big improvement.

That's all for now. Will keep you posted.
